Abstract Bijela topola (Populus alba L.) uzgojno je interesantna kao vrsta otporna na sušu i tolerantna na varijacije u razini podzemnih voda. O brojnim vrstama topola danas postoji poprilično znanje, dok anatomska svojstva potencijalno uzgojno interesantnih klonova poput ˈL-12ˈ i ˈVillafranceˈ do sada nisu uopće istraživana. Uz to, anatomska svojstva drva bijele topole iz prirodnih populacija nedovoljno su istražena i nisu kvantificirana. U disertaciji su istražena anatomska svojstva juvenilnog drva dva klona bijele topole (ˈL-12ˈ i ˈVillafrancaˈ) i bijele topole iz prirodnih populacija s lokaliteta na području Osijeka i Varaždina; njihove varijacije od srčike prema kori kao i razlike unutar klona i unutar populacija bijele topole te razlike između lokaliteta. U juvenilnom drvu pet stabala klona ˈL-12ˈ i pet stabala bijele topole s lokaliteta na području Osijeka te sedamnaest stabala klona ˈVillafrancaˈ i pet stabala bijele topole s lokaliteta na području Varaždina izmjerene su duljine drvnih vlakanaca i dvostruke debljine njihovih stijenki, promjeri i udjeli lumena drvnih vlakanaca, promjeri i udjeli lumena traheja i udjeli drvnih trakova. Kao postotni ostatak udjela lumena drvnih vlakanaca, udjela lumena traheja i udjela drvnih trakova, u juvenilnom drvu svih stabala izračunati su udjeli stijenki stanica drva. Dobiveni rezultati anatomskih svojstava juvenilnog drva klonova uspoređeni su s onima juvenilnog drva bijele topole s istog lokaliteta. Također, istražen je i utjecaj gnojidbe dušikom na anatomska svojstva juvenilnog drva klona ˈVillafrancaˈ. Varijacije anatomskih svojstava juvenilnog drva od srčike prema kori statistički su značajne, a u pojedinim svojstvima i prema porijeklu drva s oba lokaliteta razlikuju se po veličini tog značaja. Sukladno s hipotezom, utvrđene su značajnije razlike u pet anatomskih svojstava juvenilnog drva unutar prirodnih populacija bijele topole u usporedbi s razlikama između lokaliteta. U dva anatomska svojstva, te su razlike unutar prirodnih populacija bijele topole u usporedbi s razlikama između lokaliteta jednakog značaja. Suprotno tome, utvrđene su i značajnije razlike između lokaliteta u usporedbi s razlikama unutar prirodnih populacija bijele topole samo u jednom svojstvu. Razlike u pojedinim anatomskim svojstavima juvenilnog drva oba klona i juvenilnog drva bijele topole s istog lokaliteta nisu istog značaja. U juvenilnom drvu različitog porijekla s lokaliteta na području Osijeka te su razlike u jednakoj mjeri i statistički značajne i bez značaja. Međutim, u juvenilnom drvu različitog porijekla s lokaliteta na području Varaždina te su razlike u najvećoj mjeri statistički značajne. Svaka od tri razine gnojidbe dušikom različito utječe na promjenu anatomskih svojstava juvenilnog drva klona ˈVillafrancaˈ u svakoj godini primjene. Značajne promjene anatomskih svojstava drva zabilježene su u 2004. godini, dok one u 2005. godini ipak nisu značajne. Najviše anatomskih svojstava drva značajno je promijenjeno nakon srednje razine gnojidbe dušikom. Sve četiri hipotete istraživanja nisu u potpunosti potvrđene.
Abstract (english) White poplar (Populus alba L.) is becoming interesting species for breeding because of its tolerance to drought and variations in levels of ground water. Other poplar species have been well investigated, whereas anatomical properties of potential clones, such as ˈL-12ˈ and ˈVillafrancaˈ, have not been investigated at all. As well, anatomical properties of naturally grown white poplar wood have been insufficiently investigated and have not been quantified. In dissertation, anatomical properties of juvenile wood of two white poplar clones and of naturally grown white poplar from sites near Osijek and Varaždin were investigated; their variations from pith to bark and differences within the clone and within white poplar populations as well as between sites were determined. In juvenile wood of five clone ˈL-12ˈ trees and five white poplar trees from the site near Osijek as well as in seventeen clone ˈVillafrancaˈ trees and five white poplar trees from site near Varaždin, fiber length and fiber double cell wall thickness, fiber lumen diameter and lumen area, vessel lumen diameter and lumen area and ray area were measured. Cell wall area (%) was calculated as a percentage remain after detracting fiber lumen area, vessel lumen area and ray area. Anatomical properties of juvenile wood of each clone were compared to the ones of naturally grown white poplar from the same site. In addition, effect of nitrogen fertilization on anatomical properties of clone ˈVillafrancaˈ was investigated. Variations in anatomical properties of juvenile wood from pith to bark are statistically significant, and for certain properties and different wood origin are distinguished by the importance of that significance. According to the hypothesis, significant differences in five anatomical properties are found within white poplar populations in comparison to differences between sites. In two anatomical properties, those differences are of the same significance. In contrary, significant differences in only one anatomical property are found between sites in comparison to the differences within white poplar populations. Differences in individual anatomical properties of juvenile wood between each clone and juvenile wood of white poplar from the same site are not of the same significance. Those differences are equally both significant and non-significant in juvenile wood of different origins from the site near Osijek. However, in juvenile wood of different origin from the site near Varaždin those differences are mostly significant. Each of three levels of nitrogen fertilization differently affected changes in anatomical properties of clone ˈVillafrancaˈ juvenile wood in each year of application. Significant changes in anatomical properties were determined in year 2004., while those in year 2005. are not significant. Most anatomical properties were changed after the middle level of nitrogen fertilization. All four hypotheses were not completely confirmed.
